Week 14 - Patriots vs. Rams Predictions

​Here we have our projected outcomes for Week 14 Thursday Night Football matchup between the New England Patriots (6-6) and the Los Angeles Rams (8-4). We use statistics from all previous games as well as our calculated Performance Value statistic to estimate what the matchup will look like. Here we have projected the Offensive performances of both the Patriots and Rams going against each other's Defense. Finally, at the end we project the final score of the matchup, and the implications for both teams. 

Patriots Offense Projections:

​The Patriots are projected to have another low-production day in the passing game, which is somewhat expected given the Ram's pass-defense and the Patriots tendency to rely on the running game. Projected roughly between 1-2 interceptions for Cam Newton against a tough Rams secondary. However, the Patriots are projected to have another solid day rushing the football. The Patriots are ranked as one of the highest in Performance Value for Rushing Yards and Rushing Touchdowns, and it is projected they continue that streak during the game vs the Rams. If this game comes down to the Patriots having to rely on the pass more than the run, this could mean bad news for the Patriots and good news for the Rams.

Rams Offense Projections

​The Rams are projected to have a great offensive game across the board against the Patriots. Although Jared Goff is projected to throw 1 interception to a tough Patriots secondary, their offense is projected to have their way in both Pass and Rush yards. Expect the Rams to also punch it in 1-2 times throughout the game as well. The Patriots statistically tend to give up the same as what their opponent does on average, so expect the Rams to regularly have solid gains on offense and drain the clock a on offense. If all goes as predicted for the Rams, this could mean they take the victory at home against the Patriots.

Final Score Prediction

​The final score shows the Rams taking the win at home against the Patriots, 24-21 (or 24-22). If this holds true and the  Rams do indeed win, this would mean the Rams take a stand for sole possession of first place in the NFC West, putting pressure on Russel Wilson and the Seahawks to respond. For the Patriots, this would be  a heavy blow to their playoff chances, making them 6-7 on the season. A loss against the Rams pretty much rules out winning the AFC East, with the Bills and Dolphins competing for the top spot. It also all but guarantees their chances in a very competitive AFC Wild Card race have vanished. Looking forward to see what happens!
